CHAPTER 27
The next Sunday morning, thankful for not getting a late phone call from Sam, I planned instead how I would share the news with him later in the day. I had brought home paperwork for the weekend that had been accumulating and made a mental note of e-mails that needed attention.
Mother told me that Aunt Julia would be coming over later to help on the quilt after she dropped Sarah at the mall. She went on to church while I leisurely enjoyed a cup of coffee with my work, as I lounged in my comfy pajamas.
I walked around the safe haven I grew up in and realized I didnât have a picture of Sam anywhere around. There I was, posed with different relatives in different photos. I had made the effort to put away the one of Ted and me. I was beginning to realize that the short length of our relationship had left many unanswered questions. Did I know what his favorite color was? Did he ever have a dog or cat? Was he ever in the hospital? Did it make him jealous when I mentioned Ted? What made him really, reallyangry? Why were my answers to any questions about Sam always so positive and loving? Was I naïve? My thoughts were broken by a call on my cell that said âSam.â Could he read my mind and was he calling to answer all my questions!?
âAwake are you, Annie?â he cheerfully asked. âIâm at theairport on my way home. Will you have time for some lunch? I know Sunday afternoons are sometimes busy for you.â
âIâll pack a picnic lunch for us to eat outdoors at our house,â I suggested. âCome as early as you can before the quilters come!â
âYou know what I like, donât you? Do you want to meet there or would you like me to pick you up?â
âIâll be there by eleven thirty. I need to shower and dress before I raid Motherâs kitchen.â
âThatâs my sweet Annie!â he said before ending the call with his usual âlove youâ message.
Two hours later, the basket was packed and I was on my way to play a part in a storybook fairytale of a girl in love. I was wearing a red-and-white checked shirt and my favorite jeans. Picture perfect, I thought to myself. The temperature was starting to warm up these days and I needed to start getting more color on my body.
When I arrived at 333, Sam was already there. I did manage to get a hug and kiss before he asked if I had been there lately. I said yes, I had, as I took the basket, bottles of water, and a blanket over to the shady maple tree.
I remained calm as I slowly eased into the story of finding the sawed-off tree. He had already figured out that the fallen treeobviously dragged to the side of the driveway was no accident. Before he started scolding me, I leaped into releasing the news about the two notes from Steve.
